Know about our coaching approach

Setting up a charity can be hard. Founders find themselves juggling many roles and spinning lots of plates. It can feel overwhelming at times. It can also be difficult to know what to prioritise next as there’s always so much to do. Sound familiar?

As a fledgling organisation ourselves, the Pearce Foundation understands the pitfalls of working for ourselves as well as the joy this can bring.  One thing all organisations need is support, especially when starting out, as well as ongoing support as we grow.

Financial support is crucial for small charities, but this alone is sometimes not enough. This is why the Pearce Foundation provides personal support, informed by a coaching approach, alongside our capacity-building grants.

What our coaching approach looks like?

The Pearce Foundation adopts a coaching approach with our Charity Partners. We value people’s ability to lead on their own development. We also believe our Partners have all the answers. Our role is to ask the right questions in a supportive environment. What discoveries can be made? We focus on your agenda, help clarify & set goals and provide the support and the means to achieve them.

Diagnostic tool

During the onboarding session, we introduce a simple tool to provide a “bird’s eye” perspective of a Partner’s organisation. We call it the ‘Pearce Foundation Charity Wheel’ which helps to break down the overall functioning of a charity into eight spokes or work areas. Each area is explored further by asking relevant questions and listening to the aspirations and challenges faced by the Partner Charity in an open and non-judgemental way.

These domains are then ranked on a scale of one to ten, depending on what level the charity thinks they are at or how satisfied they feel in each area. This helps to clarify what areas they want to focus on next which starts the process of goal setting in that area.

GROW model

We’ll then take you through the simple but effective GROW model.

An overarching goal is identified which is then broken down into smaller stepping stones.

  • Goals identified

  • What’s happening right now

  • Explore possible options

  • Agree actions & timeframes

  • Summarise what’s been agreed

It's a results-oriented process starting with a goal and ending with a series of actions. The Pearce Foundation can help guide, feed into and offer support at each stage.
